How to wear oud
Oud divides opinion like no other note: some love its bold, animalic side, others prefer it smoothed out with rose or amber. If you are just starting, a rounded, slightly sweet oud is far easier to wear than a raw, medicinal one.
If oud is new to you, start smooth and rounded rather than raw: Barakkat Satin Oud is a polished, unisex oud and Summer Oud a lighter, more wearable take. For something rosier and softer, Oud & Roses pairs oud with rose, and Ameerat Al Arab is a rich saffron-rose oud for her. For him, Azzure Aoud is dark and smoky, while the masculine-leaning Oud 24 Hours Majestic Gold and Qaed Al Fursan bring more depth. For a full, opulent oud, Badee Al Oud Oud for Glory and Opulent Oud are rich and long-lasting.
Oud is potent, so a light hand is key: one or two sprays is plenty, and it tends to bloom and warm on the skin over the first hour. These are among the longest-lasting scents you can own, and they are at their best in cooler weather and the evening. If you are testing the water, our 5ml pocket decants let you try one before buying a full bottle.
Oud FAQs
What is oud?
Oud, also called agarwood, is the dark, resinous wood that forms when an Aquilaria tree responds to a natural infection. It is one of the most prized materials in perfumery, and its warm, woody, smoky character is the backbone of traditional Arabian scent. Only a small share of trees ever produce it, which is why real oud is so rare.
What does oud smell like?
On its own, oud is warm, woody and resinous, with a smoky, slightly animalic edge and a sweet, balsamic depth. In perfume it is usually smoothed and rounded out, most often with rose, amber or sweet spice, which is what makes the oud scents here rich and wearable rather than harsh.
Why is oud so expensive?
Pure oud is one of the costliest ingredients in the world, because only a fraction of Aquilaria trees produce it and the wood takes years to form. The oud perfumes in this collection stay affordable by building that character with oud accords and blends rather than rare wild oud, so you get the style without the price.
Is oud for men or women?
Oud is genuinely unisex and always has been, traditionally worn by everyone in the Middle East. As a rough guide, rose-oud and softer blends can lean a little feminine while darker, smokier ouds lean masculine, but there is no rule, and plenty of the scents here wear beautifully on anyone.
Most of these ouds carry a warm, ambered depth, so if that is what draws you, the amber perfumes collection is a natural next step, and for the softer, rose-led ouds, our floral perfumes are worth a look too.
